Some of the deadliest US Mass shootings (2010-2022)...

Uncovering the pathway to violence
Data analysis & Visualisation

Year : 2023

Role: Worked solo to analyse data and craft interactive visualisations, using metaphor and storytelling to make insights engaging.

Context: This assignment involved working with existing data, analysing it with data analytics tools, and pairing it with a metaphor to create a meaningful visual story. I chose to focus on US mass shootings (1966–2022), aiming to raise awareness and highlight possible behavioural patterns of offenders - so warning signs can be recognised earlier.

Outcomes: Interactive dashboard published in tableau public

Pathway to Violence - Offenders behaviour map

From the behaviour mapping of the offenders involved in the 13 deadliest mass shootings it can be seen that many offenders have exhibited abusive behaviour, was in isolation and showed high interest in past mass violence incidents. Most of them were substance users and had high interest in fire arms. Many spent significant time in planning these attacks and were also experienced with firearms. With these 13 cases it cannot be concluded that anyone exhibiting these signs will commit an act, but for sure they need help.

Metaphor

In this data visualization project on US gun violence, I have employed multiple metaphors to deepen the context and emotional impact of the data.

Blood spots are used to convey the intensity and brutality of tragic mass shooting incidents, with each red spot indicating the number of incidents and the number of people killed. Bullet holes represent mass shooting incidents across every state on the US map, symbolizing each incident as a wound on the country. Fingerprint icons depict the lives lost and injured in these mass shootings, emphasizing the individuality and humanity of each victim. Mandalas, which signify the universe and are used in many traditions for sacred rites, are incorporated to represent the sacredness of the lives lost and to envision a future towards healing. Lastly, the image of a human brain's wiring inspired the development of a behavior map of the offenders, representing the complexity of human behavior and the intricate factors that contribute to these tragic events.
